Obverse description : Couple, vêtu à l’antique, prête serment sur un autel orné d’un arc à trois cordes, d’un carquois et du flambeau de l’Hymen. Signé : PETIT F. et DE PUYMAURIN D.

Un prêtre debout à droite, tourné vers la gauche, bénit un couple agenouillé devant lui. Il tient un livre dans la main gauche et une croix rayonnante dans la main droite, levée au dessus du couple. Derrière le prêtre, un autel parcouru de lierre sur lequel est déposé un calice. Sans signature.

Commentary
Le coffret, en cuir marron et feutrine et soie bleue, comprend deux alliances en or (20,5 mm/1,61g et 20 mm/0,99g gravé à l’intérieur NUPTIAL, diamètre extérieur) rangés sous les médaillettes MARIAGE CHRETIEN de diamètre : 23,5 mm chacune et poids : 4,97g pour la GL et 4,97g pour la RA. Le gros module (39 mm), FIDELITE BONHEUR pèse 25,13g.

Historical background
LOVE AND MARRIAGE
It was customary in the past to give a treizain during the wedding mass. This treizain was blessed and signified entry into a community of property for the married couple. The treizain, which later became a medal or wedding token, was so called in honor of Jesus Christ and the twelve apostles. This practice continued until the first half of the 20th century. The reference work on the subject is the work of Jules Florange, Love and marriage in numismatics, Moulins, 1936 now replaced by that of Henri Térisse, La Numismatique du Mariage, Argenton-sur-Creuse 2008.
