Historical background

LORRAINE - Duchy of Lorraine - FRANÇOIS I.

(1544-1545)

Francis was born in Nancy February 15, 1517 from the union of Antoine de Lorraine and Renée de Bourbon. In 1526, he was engaged to Anne of Cleves, daughter of John II of Cleves, Count de la Marck, but the marriage never took place and Anne married King Henry VIII of England, which repudiated the same year their nuptials. François married to daughter Christine of Denmark, Christian II and Elizabeth of Austria, sister of Charles Quint. He received the ducal crown June 14, 1544 after the death of his father Anthony. He reigned shortly on the duchy. Already sick when he comes, he died June 12, 1545 in Remiremont where he had retired to undergo treatment.
