LEMOVECAS - Limoges (Haute-Vienne)
Lemovices capital, the city is at the crossroads of "Via Agrippa" linking Lugdunum (Lyon) to Mediolanum Santonum (Saintes) and "via Avaricum Tolosa" between Toulouse and Bourges. The third century to the late fourth century, Augustoritum is being phased out following the unrest and insecurity caused by the Germanic invasions. The early sixth century, Limoges and Augustoritum becomes a second urban center (the future castellum Sanctis-Martialis) emerges around a necropolis nearby, northwest, which retains the tomb of Martial, the first bishop. The Franks took the city. They reinvest abruptly at the beginning of the eighth century, when the Muslim invasion stopped at Poitiers by Charles Martel. The appointment of the goldsmith Eligius (St. Eloi future), significant local, as a close associate of King Dagobert Merovingian, softens the Frankish domination. Source: Wikipedia.org.
