Historical background

ITALY - VENICE - NICCOLÒ TRON (68th doge)

(1471-1473)

Niccolò Tron (born in 1399 in Venice) is the 68th doge of Venice, elected in 1471 and until his death on July 28, 1473. He succeeds Cristoforo Moro and continues the war against the Turks. He reformed the Venetian monetary system and introduced the Tron or Trono, coin bearing the image of the doge. This monetary type breaks with the monetary tradition of Venice which rejects any cult of personality. Moreover, after his death, this coin will be withdrawn from circulation.
