Matthias I was born on February 24, 1557 in Vienna and died in the same city on March 20, 1619. He is a prince of the House of Habsburg. He was King of Hungary from 1608, under the name of Matthias II, and King of Bohemia from 1611. Elected Holy Roman Emperor in 1612, succeeding his elder brother Rudolf II, his hesitant policy strongly influenced by his Chancellor, Cardinal Klesl, played a key role in the outbreak of the Thirty Years' War..
