Historical background

HOLY GROUND - PRINCIPALITY OF ANTIOCH - RAYMOND ROUPEN

(1216-1219)

Antioch was the first great city to fall into the hands of the Crusaders in 1098. Bohémond de Tarente and Robert Guiscard, from the Normans, formed a first Principality. Raymond Roupen belonged to the great Armenian family of Roupen which was to give several kings to Cilicia. Raymond was definitively expelled from Antioch in 1219 by Bohemond IV.
