Historical background

GERMANY- BAVARIA - SCHONGAU- LUDWIG II

(1268-1294)

Schongau is a city in Germany, in Upper Bavaria in the district of Weilheim-Schongau, on the Romantic Road. It is located on the western bank of the Lech in the Pfaffenwinkel. The old town is home to many historic buildings. Schongau is the westernmost town of Upper Bavaria, the Lech marking the separation with Swabia. A dialect intermediate between Bavarian and Swabian is spoken there. Schongau is near the Roman road "Via Claudia Augusta" to which it owes its ancient origin, around 47 BC. In the Middle Ages, it was an important stop and market on the Verona - Augsburg - Nuremberg route and on the salt road between Berchtesgaden and the Allgäu. In the 12th century, Schongau belonged to the Guelphs. In 1268 the region came under the domination of the Wittelsbachs..
