Historical background

ELLIS ISLANDS - KEPHALLENIA - PALEIS (PALE)

(4th - 2nd century BC)

The city of Paleis was supposed to have been founded by Peleus, the son of Cephalos, the eponymous hero of Cephallenia. The city was located in an agricultural valley surmounted by an acropolis. The city seems to have belonged to the League of Delos and the second Athenian thalassocracy. The city joined the Aetolian League from 224 BC It resisted the siege undertaken by Philip V of Macedon. After the defeat of Thermopylae in 191 BC, it submitted to the Romans and was integrated into the province of Macedonia in 146 BC.
