Historical background

CYPRUS - SALAMINA - PNYTHAGORAS

(351-332 BC)

In 351, a revolt broke out in Cyprus against the authority of Artaxerxes III Ochus (359-338 AC.). Evagoras II was driven out of Salamis and replaced by Pnytagoras (351-332 AC.). Evagoras II took refuge in Asia Minor, in Caria, with Idreius satrap of Caria. Artaxerxes III ordered the formation of a fleet and an army to reconquer Cyprus. Phocion, leader of the fleet, and Evagoras II with forty ships and eight thousand Greek mercenaries landed in Cyprus and laid siege to Salamis. Evagoras failed, had to definitively abandon Cyprus and return to Caria. To compensate him, Artaxexes III gave him Sidon, in Phoenicia. Pnythagoras retained the favor of the Great King and remained his vassal until the arrival of Alexander III the Great.
