Historical background

CORNELIA

(49 BC)

Lucius Cornelius Lentulus and Caius Claudius Marcellus were the two consuls of 49 BC. Supporters of Pompey, they left Rome and took refuge in Sicily, then in Dyrrachium in Illyria. Lentulus travels to Asia Minor to raise troops for Pompey. He was present at the battle of Pharsalus (48 BC), followed Pompey to Egypt, was arrested and put to death on the orders of Ptolemy. Marcellus commands part of the Pompeian fleet stationed in Rhodes in 48 BC. Caius Claudius Marcellus is the brother of Marcus Claudius Marcellus, consul in 51 BC.
