Historical background

CILICIA – KORYKOS / CORYCUS

(1st century BC)

The coastal city of Korykos (in Latin Corycus) was located halfway between the mountains of Lamos and Kalykadnos, southwest of Elæussa. The region was renowned for its troglodyte caves, named "Corycian caves" by ancient authors: Pindar (Pyth. I.31), Strabo (XIV.670) and Pliny the Elder (NH. V.92).
