BRUTTIUM - Rhegium

(387-271 BC)

Rhegium (Rhegion), the last city of the Italian boot on the mainland, located on the Strait of Messina in front of Sicily, was founded around 720 BC by settlers chalcidoid. The city was destroyed in 387 BC by Dionysius of Syracuse. It was however rebuilt by Denys young to 356-350 BC The Romans captured the city in 271 BC, but were quickly expelled. After 203 BC and the end of the second Punic war, Rhegium definitely fell under Roman domination.
