Historical background

AUXERRE - COUNTY OF AUXERRE - ANONYMOUS

(10th-12th centuries)

The coinage of Auxerre began after the edict of Pistres in 864. At the end of the 10th century, we have coins from Eudes de Champagne with the names of the cities of Sens and Auxerre. In 1076, William I (1040-1097) ceded the county to his son, Robert, Bishop of Auxerre. In 1089, William II (1089-1147) united the two counties again. William III (1147-1161) succeeded him. Guillaume IV unites the counties of Auxerre, Nevers and Tonnerre.
