Historical background

AQUITAINE - duchy of Aquitaine - HENRI II PLANTAGENÊT

(1152-1169)

Henry Plantagenet, Duke of Normandy, Count of Anjou, Maine and Touraine, married Eleanor of Aquitaine, wife of King Louis VII of France that it had repudiated. Henry thus became Duke of Aquitaine and Count of Poitou. In 1154, he inherited the throne of England and became the most powerful lord of the West. In 1169, he will leave the administration of Aquitaine to his son Richard the Lion Heart (1169-1199).
