Frederick was born in Berlin January 24, 1712 and is the son of Frederick William. He was first an ally of France in the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748) and then there was reversal of alliance during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). Friend of Voltaire, he wrote in French and was the model of the enlightened despot of the second half of the eighteenth century. He succeeded his father Frederick William, King Sergeant and made a real capital Berlin and the Castle of Sans Souci in Potsdam a little Versailles. With a warlike policy, he made the most powerful state of Prussia Eastern Europe and counterbalanced the influence of Austria and Russia. He died at the castle Sanssouci (Potsdam), August 17, 1786.
