Commentary

When we look at the head on the right, we could be dealing with a portrait of Apollo, copied directly from the Marseille bronzes, or with that of Venus, perhaps imitated from the Antibes bronzes. No attribute allows us to affirm that we are in the presence of a portrait of Artemis.

Historical background

GALLIA - VOLCÆ ARECOMICI (Area of Nîmes)

(1st century BC)

The Arecomic Volques, from the same group or people (volk) would have emigrated from the Danubian regions to come and settle in southern Gaul in the 3rd century BC. Installed on part of the current departments of Gard and Hérault, their capital was Nemausus (Nîmes). It is normally on their territory that Narbo Martius (Narbonne) was founded in 118 BC, which was to become the capital of the Provincia. Sources: Caesar (BG. VII, 7, 64); Strabo (G. IV, 1, 12).
