Commentary

La tiare pontificale, appelée aussi le trirègne (en latin tiara ou triregnum), est la triple couronne des papes, à caractère non liturgique (contrairement à la mitre papale), mais cependant doctrinal car la tiare symbolise le pouvoir pétrinien donné par Jésus-Christ à saint Pierre.
Quoique actuellement elle ne soit plus portée par les papes (depuis Paul VI, qui l'a coiffée en dernier), la tiare fait toujours partie des armoiries du Vatican et de l'emblème du Saint-Siège.

La tiare est donc utilisée pour exprimer solennellement le pouvoir spécifique du pape et est distincte de la mitre, insigne liturgique des évêques de l'Église latine, également portée par le pape en tant qu'Évêque de Rome.

The pontifical tiara, also called the triregnum (in Latin tiara or triregnum), is the triple crown of the popes, of a non-liturgical nature (unlike the papal miter), but nevertheless doctrinal because the tiara symbolizes the Petrine power given by Jesus Christ to Saint Peter. Although it is no longer worn by the popes (since Paul VI, who wore it last), the tiara is still part of the Vatican coat of arms and the emblem of the Holy See. The tiara is therefore used to solemnly express the specific power of the pope and is distinct from the miter, the liturgical insignia of the bishops of the Latin Church, also worn by the pope as Bishop of Rome.
