Pie XI, en latin : Pius XI, né Ambrogio Damiano Achille Ratti le 31 mai 1857 à Desio, dans la province de Monza et de la Brianza (Italie) est le 259e pape de l'Église catholique.
Élu le 6 février 1922, son pontificat est marqué par le règlement de la question romaine, avec la reconnaissance et l'institution de l'État de la Cité du Vatican, par les accords du Latran, en 1929. Il est confronté à la montée du communisme, du fascisme et du nazisme en Europe..
