Obverse description : Buste diadémé, drapé et cuirassé de Valens à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (A'a) ; diadème perlé.
Obverse translation : "Dominus Noster Valens Pius Felix Augustus", (Notre seigneur Valens pieux et heureux auguste).

Reverse description : Victoria (la Victoire) marchant à gauche, tenant une couronne de la main droite et une palme de la gauche.

Commentary


Poids léger. Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Ptéryges à peine visibles sous le paludamentum. Ce type semble plus rare que ne le laissent supposer les ouvrages généraux.
Lightweight. Type 3 ribbons with rounded ends. Pteryges barely visible under the paludamentum. This type appears rarer than general works suggest.

Valens, after having been proclaimed august by his brother, receives the charge of governing the East. Since Decius, he is the first emperor killed in battle by the Goths in Adrianople, August 9, 378.
