La ville d'Avranches se situe sur le littoral sud du département de la Manche. Elle a donné son nom à ses alentours, le pays de l'Avranchin. Le peuple des Abrincates est mentionné très tardivement dans les sources antiques. Pline l'Ancien nomme ce peuple Abrincatui au premier siècle de notre ère.
