Commentary
Robert de Sorbon est né à Sorbon près de Rethel en 1201. Chapelain de Saint-Louis, il fonde une société d’ecclésiastiques séculiers occupés par l’étude et qui enseignent gratuitement. Chanoine de Paris en 1258, il est le premier proviseur de la congrégation. Il meurt en 1274.
Robert de Sorbon was born in Sorbon near Rethel in 1201. Chaplain of Saint-Louis, he founded a society of secular clergymen who were dedicated to study and who taught for free. Canon of Paris in 1258, he was the first headmaster of the congregation. He died in 1274.
