Depuis 1969, la Turquie a connu de très forts taux d’inflation. En 1994, le record sera atteint avec 125 % d’inflation. Les turques ont peu à peu pris l’habitude de payer avec des monnaies et des billets en milliers de livres, puis en millions et en milliards. Suite à une grave crise financière en 2001, la Turquie a ramené son inflation à un niveau raisonnable avant l’introduction de la nouvelle livre turque en 2005 équivalente à 1.000.000 de livre turque..

Turkish women gradually became accustomed to paying with coins and banknotes in thousands of lira, then millions and billions. Following a severe financial crisis in 2001, Turkey brought its inflation down to a reasonable level before the introduction of the new Turkish lira in 2005, equivalent to 1,000,000 Turkish lira.
