Obverse

Obverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.
Obverse description : Tête stylisée à gauche, avec l'œil en creux. Le crâne semble être orné d’un casque ou d’une chevelure traitée en quatre globules qui longent le bourrelet circulaire délimitant la monnaie.

Reverse

Reverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.
Reverse description : Taureau cornupète chargeant à gauche, un globule très saillant au-dessus de la queue.

Commentary

Cet exemplaire est de même classe que le précédent pour le droit, mais le globule du revers en fait une variante complètement inédite. Exemplaire d’un poids lourd (4,68 grammes).

TURONES (Area of Touraine)

(2nd - 1st century BC)

The people of the Turons, settled on the Loire, left their name to Tours and Touraine. They are quoted several times in Caesar's Commentaries. They seem to have grown in importance after the disappearance of the Arverne empire in 121 BC. Like the Pictons, the Turons provided eight thousand men for the relief army which was to release Alesia. Their main oppidum seems to have been placed near the site of Amboise. Caesar (BG. II, 35; VII, 4, 75; VIII, 46).
