SALIÈRES, Sylvain est un sculpteur français, né à Escorneboeuf (Gers) en 1865 et mort à Pittsburgh, Pennsylvanie, États-Unis vers 1923.
D’origine modeste, Sylvain Salières a connu même une enfance douloureuse. Fils d’un maître valet et orphelin à l’âge de quatre ans, il est recueilli par l’hôpital d’Auch qui le place comme domestique à la ferme. C’est en gardant les troupeaux qu’il s’amuse à modeler des figurines avec de la terre.
Repéré et recommandé par l’Inspecteur des enfants, Sylvain Salières est inscrit à l’Ecole Chrétienne où il apprend le dessin. Devenu boursier de la ville d’Auch et du Conseil Général du Gers, il peut suivre les cours de l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Toulouse pendant quatre ans, qu’il quitte pour celle de Paris où il devient l’élève de Falguière et de Marqueste.
Sylvain Salières participe aux Salons de 1890 à 1903 en exposant essentiellement des bustes et quelques compositions comme « Romance d’Avril » en 1896 ou une « Salomé et Saint-Jean » en 1897. Il obtient en 1895 le second prix de Rome avec le bas-relief « David vainqueur de Goliath est amené à Saül ». Outre-atlantique, Sylvain Salières continua brillamment sa carrière au Canada (Vancouver) et aux Etats Unis, au Carnegie Institute de Pittsburgh (Pennsylvanie). Il participa également à la réalisation du tombeau du Commodore John Paul Jones au sein de l’Académie de Marine à Annapolis dans le Maryland.
Sylvain Salières se distingue par une œuvre pleine de naturel et d’aisance, servie par une scrupuleuse observation de la réalité et une maîtrise rare des modelés. La jeune « Femme endormie » ou « la Belle noyée » présentée au musée en sont une parfaite illustration..
