Commentary

The arms of Nantes, which clearly mark the city's maritime vocation and Breton affiliation, already appeared on a 14th-century seal (featuring a boat). They bear gules, a vessel equipped with gold, dressed in ermine, sailing on a sea of sinople, moving from the point and wavy with argent, with an ermine chief.
