Historical background

TROAS - ABYDOS

(6th - 5th century BC)

Abydos, located on the Hellespont, opposite Sestos, was a colony of Miletus. The city is supposed to have been a center of emission very early from the end of the 6th century BC. At the end of the first Macedonian war, Abydos would have been declared a free city (Livy XXXIII. 30). But in fact, it was certainly after the Peace of Apamea in 188 BC that Abydos, like the other cities of Asia Minor, became independent. Abydos retains some importance under Roman rule because of its geographical position at the entrance to the Straits.
