Historical background

Treviri (Region of Trier)

(Second - first century BC)

The Treviri were an important tribe in Gaul Belgium who controlled both banks of the Moselle. They had for neighbors Aduatuci the Eburones, the Remi and Médiomatriques. Their main oppidum was in Titelberg (Luxembourg). Their capital was Trier which was refounded by Augustus as the Colonia Augusta Treverorum. This tribe is often mentioned by Caesar. The Treviri participated in the War in particular at 54, during the revolt of Ambiorix to cut lines after Caesar's troops massacred Sabinus and Cotta. The Treviri not seem to have sent troops to aid in 52 BC Caesar (Bg. I, 37, II, 24, III, 11, IV, 6, 10, V, 2-4, 24, 47 , 53, 55, 58, VII 63; VIII, 25, 45, 52).
