Historical background

Tournai was invested June 27, 1709 and his defense was entrusted to Louis-Charles de Hautefort Surville Marquis, who had already participated in the defense of Lille with Marshal Boufflers. The city capitulated on 29 July, but Surville and his men retreated into the citadel which only surrendered 3 September 1709 after a siege of 57 days. Parts of 20 sols or patards were made from the dishes and the Marquis struck on July 13. Under the Treaty of Utrecht (1713), Tournai was permanently attached to the Austrian Netherlands.
