Commentary

Ce type monétaire ressemble à l’obole illustrée dans l’ouvrage de Poey d’Avant, dont cet auteur croit voir un lis dans le premier canton. Il pourrait s’agit de trois points posés en triangle, comme sur cet exemplaire.
This monetary type resembles the obol illustrated in the work of Poey d'Avant, in which this author believes he sees a lily in the first canton. It could be three points placed in a triangle, as in this example

Historical background

TONNERRE - COUNTY OF TONNERRE - JOHN

(1304-1346)

Tonnerre had been a Carolingian workshop. The county was normally part of Burgundy rather than Champagne. Very early in the 11th century, through a skilful marriage policy, the counts of Nevers came into possession of Tonnerre, which was thus united to the county of Auxerre. The county of Tonnerre regained its independence in 1273 on the death of Mahaut de Bourbon, and was devolved to Marguerite de Bourgogne, the wife of Charles d'Anjou, king of Naples and count of Provence. Finally in 1292, the county passed to the house of Chalon where it was to remain until 1433.
