Historical background

TONNERRE - COUNTY OF TONNERRE - ANONYMOUS

(12th century)

Tonnerre had been a Carolingian workshop. The county was normally part of Burgundy rather than Champagne. Very early in the 11th century, through a skilful marriage policy, the counts of Nevers came into possession of Tonnerre, which was thus united to the county of Auxerre. The county of Tonnerre regained its independence in 1273 on the death of Mahaut de Bourbon, and was devolved to Marguerite de Bourgogne, the wife of Charles d'Anjou, king of Naples and count of Provence. Finally in 1292, the county passed to the house of Chalon where it was to remain until 1433.
