Historical background

TONKIN - French Protectorate

The second half of the nineteenth century saw the slow takeover of China by European powers. Among the many episodes of this process, the decision of Tonkin by France is a major issue of the French colonial policy. Wishing to acquire a strong position in southern China, France decided in effect to take control of the Red River that connects Hanoi, the capital of Tonkin, the rich Yunnan Province in China which triggers a war between these two countries ( September 1881 - June 1885). Commanded by Captain Henri Rivière, the French, equipped with three gunboats and 700 men strong, seized Hanoi April 25, 1882. A year later, in May 1883, the death of River unleashed passions in the Chamber of Deputies in Paris. Hanoi is surrounded and then Jules Ferry says the two naval Far East divisions against Admiral Courbet happens August 18, 1883 unexpectedly before Thuan-year, wearing Hue, it bombed. A week later (25 August 1883), the Emperor of Annam Tonkin gives to France as a protectorate under the Treaty of Hue. China rejects the treaty and invaded the province of Tonkin. While neither country has formally declared war, military operations began in autumn 1883 and ending in June 1885, shortly after the fall of the government Ferry. caused by the retirement of Lang Son. Despite this retreat, ground operations see the success of the French in Tonkin, while the naval victories of France forced China to concede defeat. The treaty ending the war was signed June 9, 1885. China recognizes the Treaty of Hue and abandons its sovereignty over Annam and Tonkin. Already have Cochinchina, Cambodia and Laos, France, with Annam and Tonkin, now controls all of the Indochina Peninsula. 1891-1893 is created in the Indochinese Federation, composed of Cochin and four protectorates. These territories are included in the French Indochina.
