Historical background

TIBERIUS III APSIMAR

(late 698-summer 705)

Tiberius III revolted against Leonce (695-698), whom he overthrew, but failed to stem the Muslim breakthrough in Africa. He had to face the turbulent Justinian II who had escaped from Cherson to take refuge with the Khazars, then with the Bulgarians. In 705, at the head of a barbarian army, Justinian II retook Constantinople. He hastened to take revenge on Leonce and Tiberius III whom he had mutilated before executing them.
