Exemplaire sur un flan extrêmement large et ovale avec une jolie patine de médaillier foncée avec des reflets mordorés. Légère trace de tréflage au droit avec un plat sur le cou. Faiblesse de frappe au revers sur Dionysos

Mêmes coins que l’exemplaire du British Museum (BMC. 58), que l’exemplaire de l’Hunterian Coin Cabinet de Glasgow (HC. 16, pl. 25/20) et que l’exemplaire de la vente de la SBS du 27 octobre 1977, n° 310. Nombreuses traces de cassure de coin perceptibles au droit et au revers.

Historical background
THRACE - MARONEIA
(after 148 BC)
The name of Maronea, which had been colonized by inhabitants of Chios, comes from Maron, priest of Apollo who gave Ulysses the means to neutralize Polyphemus by making him drunk. Maron is also described as a son of Dionysos, the Greek god of wine and drunkenness. Wine and vines were therefore important, hence the representation of Dionysos on the obverse, and the city was renowned for the quality of its wine, which is even mentioned by Homer in the Odyssey. The city itself, ancient Ortagurea, located on the northern shore of Lake Ismaris on the Sthenas River, was close to Dikaia and Abdera also located in Thrace.
