Historical background



Michel II, as Justin three hundred years earlier, is a lowly soldier. He joined his son Theophilus early in the reign, May 12 June 1 821 or 822, and the latter succeeded him in 829. Theophilus was a cultured and a scholar who continued the fight against opponents of iconoclasm man, but with moderation and justice. He associated his eldest son Constantine to the throne, but he died in 831. He had to cope with the rise of Islamic power and, at the end of his reign, he saw the fall of Amorium fortress from which he came. He died in 842 and his son, Michael III lush, succeeded him.
