En 1497, l’explorateur Jean Cabot prit possesion de Terre-Neuve au nom de la Couronne d’Angleterre. La colonie reçut le statut de dominion en 1907 en même temps que le Nouvelle-Zélande. Ce n’est qu’en 1949 suite à un référendum que Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador rejoignit la confédération canadienne..

The colony received dominion status in 1907 at the same time as New Zealand. It was not until 1949, following a referendum, that Newfoundland and Labrador joined the Canadian Confederation.

Following the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, the French definitively ceded Newfoundland to the British. In 1824, the island became a Crown colony. In 1907, Newfoundland achieved Dominion status, but this status was suspended in 1934 due to the territory's excessive debt.
