Exemplaire sur un flan ovale, bien centré des deux côtés. Beau portrait inhabituel d’Antiochus XIII. Joli revers de frappe un peu molle. Patine grise superficielle avec des reflets dorés

Commentary


Ce type semble beaucoup plus rare que ne le laissent supposer les ouvrages généraux. C’est la première fois que nous le proposons à la vente. Même coin de droit que les exemplaires de la collection Houghton (CSE. 400, pl. 22) et de la collection Spaer.

SYRIA - UNITED Seleucid - ANTIOCHUS XIII ASIATICUS

(69-64 BC)

Antiochus XIII is the son of Cleopatra Selene and probably Antiochus X Philopator. Sent to Rome by their mother to claim the throne of Egypt after the assassination of Ptolemy XI, it is recognized king of Syria by the Senate. Lucullus installs king of Syria after chasing Tigranes of Armenia. He meets a competitor in the person of Philip II, supported by the people of Antioch that the hunt. It is restored by Lucullus. Pompey provincialized Syria. Antiochus XIII took refuge with Sampsikeramos, prince of Emesa, his ally who eventually discarded. This is the last king of the Seleucid dynasty.
