Commentary


Marc-Charles Galland (1816-1901), d'une famille originaire de Menglon en Dauphiné, dont une branche fut reçue à la bourgeoisie en 1791, fit une belle fortune en exerçant la profession d'agent de change.
A la fois regardant et généreux, il encouragea les arts, créant notamment un prix annuel pour le développement des industries d'art, d'émaillage et de bijouterie.
Sans descendants directs, il légua sa fortune de 8,5 millions à la ville de Genève, à condition que l'on donnât son nom à une rue. Cette somme, considérable pour l'époque, ayant servi notamment à construire le Musée d'art et d'histoire à la rue de l'Observatoire, celle-ci devint la rue Charles-Galland.
Les ponts Charles-GALLAND sont les deux ponts dans la continuation de cette rue, enjambant le Boulevard Helvétique et le Boulevard Emile-Jaques-Dalcroze..
