Dernier roi règnant de la maison d'Holstein-Gottorp, Charles XIII n’a pas d’héritier et adopte en 1810 le maréchal d’Empire Jean-Baptiste Jules Bernadotte. A sa mort en 1818, ce dernier lui succède sous le nom de Charles XIV Jean de Suède.
The last reigning king of the House of Holstein-Gottorp, Charles XIII had no heir and adopted Marshal of the Empire Jean-Baptiste Jules Bernadotte in 1810. Upon his death in 1818, the latter succeeded him under the name Charles XIV John of Sweden.
