Historical background

(Third century BC)

The concept of a people or tribe seems to fade under certain powers when mints examines imitations Emporion or Rhode. If prototypes are struck beyond the Pyrenees, the imitations were made on both sides of the mountain range. The early disappearance of R. Boudet (1958-1995) has not enabled it to establish a corpus of these currencies. The findings are not limited to the Aquitaine, but are divided on the big West between the Loire and the Pyrenees, nearly a third of the territory of ancient Gaul. Finds imitations of the drachma Emporion, which seems to have had a wider distribution, are numerous and spread over the entire geographical area: Charnizay in Indre-et-Loire or in Issoudun Indre Ruscino up in the Pyrenees-Orientales. Finds currency Rhode focus on Aquitaine and do not exceed the price of the Garonne and Dordogne with treasures Mouleydier Dordogne or Mouliets-et-Villemartin Gironde until Montlaurès in Aude and Foix in Arriege. Who assign these mints, sometimes very different, which do not exhibit homogeneity in typological series?.
