Historical background

SPANISH NETHERLANDS - NAMUR - PHILIP V OF BOURBON

(1/11/1700-9/07/1746)

Philippe V (19/12/1683-9/07/1746) is the second son of Louis, the Grand Dauphin, and Marie-Anne of Bavaria, therefore the grandson of Louis XIV and the brother of the Dukes of Burgundy and of Berry. He is first Duke of Anjou. On the death of Charles II of Spain in 1700, he was designated as king by will. It takes thirteen years to conquer his kingdom, having as a competitor Charles III of Habsburg (future Charles VI of Austria). He is the ancestor of the Bourbons of Spain who still reign today. On becoming king of Spain and the Indies, he had renounced all claim to the throne of France. He was not recognized as king until the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. He lost the Netherlands which returned to the Austrian branch of the Habsburgs.
