Historical background

SPAIN - VISIGOTHS - SUINTILA

(00/03/621-26/03/631)

Suintila was proclaimed king of the Visigoths in March 621. He succeeded Récarède II. During his reign, he submitted the Vascons and built Oligitis (today Olite in Navarre); in 624, he expelled the last Byzantines from the Iberian Peninsula, some bastions of which remained in the Algarve. On March 26, 631, he was dethroned by Sisenand, governor of Gaul of the Goths. He died in 640, in Toledo.
