Historical background

SPAIN - BARCELONA - LOUIS XIV THE SUN KING

The uprising of Catalonia (Levatamiento de Cataluna) against the authority of Philip IV of Spain lasted twelve years. Louis XIII, then Louis XIV, were counts of Barcelona. Louis XIV retained the county until 1652, when the capital of Catalonia was definitively lost. By the Treaty of the Pyrenees, Louis XIV abandoned Catalonia, but kept Roussillon with Perpignan.
