Historical background

SOUTH AFRICA - REPUBLIC - PRESIDENT KRUGER

(1881-1902)

Paul Kruger (1832-1904) was the founder of the Transvaal Republic in 1881. He opposed the British colonization policy in South Africa. The Boer War broke out in 1899 between the Republic of South Africa, the Transvaal and the Orange Free State against the colony of Cape Town, the bridgehead of the English imperialist forces. It is the first modern war with the creation of concentration camps for civilian populations. Defeated, the Boers were killed or assimilated into what was to become the Union of South Africa in 1910. Kruger died in exile in Switzerland in 1904.
