Commentary

Olivier de Serres, the “father of French agronomy,” was born in Villeneuve-de-Berg in the Vivarais region. Born into a wealthy Protestant family, he showed early on an intellectual curiosity similar to that of the humanists. He is best known for introducing silk cultivation to France, but his work on three-year crop rotations brought about significant changes in cultivation techniques.

Historical background

AGRICULTURAL, HORTICULTURAL, FISHING AND HUNTING SOCIETIES

The Agricultural Societies were free associations which set themselves the task of discussing agricultural theories, perfecting methods, etc., and on the establishment of which the law imposed no other condition than that of obtaining the approval of their statutes by the prefectural authority. Those which deal more especially with practical applications are called agricultural councils..
