Historical background

SICILY - SYRACUSE

(Fifth century BC)

Democracy (466-413 avant J.-C.)

After the death of Hieron in 467 and the usurpation of Thrasybulus, democracy was established in 466 BC in Syracuse as in most cities of Sicily. The city then experienced a long period of economic expansion and political radiating throughout the island. Simultaneously, she had to fight against the Etruscans and especially against the Carthaginians who tried periodically to settle or at least control the eastern Sicily. During the Peloponnesian War, it had to face on his land the dreaded Athenian expedition from 415 BC Nicias and Alcibiades. After the first recall, the Athenian fleet was sunk in the harbor of Syracuse, Nicias killed and the survivors of the Athenian army condemned to forced labor in the stone quarries. In 409, the Carthaginians invaded the island again and seized Selinus and Himera and Agrigento in 405 BC Dionysius of Syracuse seized power and drives the invaders.
