SICILY - Selinunte

(Fifth century BC)

Selinunte was founded by settlers Megaran. The new coinage begins after 466 BC when Selinunte experiencing great economic prosperity. Aggression against Segesta in 413 BC, caused the intervention of Athens in Sicily and the disastrous expedition of Alcibiades reported by Thucydides in the Peloponnesian War. The city emerged winner of this first round, but could not resist the Carthaginian invasion. The city was besieged, was destroyed in 409 BC.
