Commentary


Poids lourd. Pour ce type, G. Buceti a recensé trois exemplaires pour ce type avec des poids légers, compris entre 1,92 g et 2,24 g. Ce type fait penser aux émissions siciliennes de Carthage (cf.MONNAIES 60, n° 156, A. 15a). Notre collectionneur a choisi de placer son exemplaire ici, à Panorme.
Suivant les ouvrages, ce type monétaire trouve sa place entre la fin du Ve siècle avant J;-C. vers 405-380 ou au siècle suivant entre 339 et 330 avant J.-C. La série semble se placer entre les deux vers 380-340 avant J.-C., hypothèse retenue par P. Strauss dans le catalogue de la collection Laffaille.

Coinage seems to have started around 415 BC and is gaining importance from 405 BC Panormus was a very important link in the system penetration Carthaginian Sicily in the fourth century BC . The city was finally taken in 253 BC by the Romans during the First Punic War.
