Historical background
SICILY - ADRANON
(4th century BC)
Adranon, founded by Dionysius of Syracuse in 400 BC was located on the slopes of Etna, not far from Catania in the eastern part of Sicily. The city was dedicated to Apollo. The city was conquered by Timoleon in 344 BC after a battle between the Carthaginians allied to Hiketas and Timoleon. The city had to face the raids of Mamertine mercenaries. Adranon supported Hieron II during the first Punic. Adranon fell into Roman hands during the First Punic War in 263 BC.
