Charles VIII de France ou Charles VIII l'Affable, né le 30 juin 1470 au château d'Amboise, mort le 7 avril 1498 au même endroit, fut roi de France de 1483 à 1498.
Fils unique de Louis XI et de sa deuxième épouse Charlotte de Savoie, il est le septième et dernier roi de la succession directe de la branche des Valois de la dynastie capétienne.
Devenu roi à l'âge de treize ans, il fut placé sous la tutelle de sa soeur Anne de Beaujeu, régente de France. A vingt-et-un an, il se marie à Anne de Bretagne, préparant ainsi l'annexion du duché de Bretagne au royaume de France (1491). Son règne vit la perte du comté d'Artois, de comté de Bourgogne et du comté de Roussillon qu'avait annexés son père Louis XI (1493). Son expédition pour conquérir le royaume de Naples marque le point de départ des guerres d'Italie (1494).

The only son of Louis XI and his second wife Charlotte of Savoy, he was the seventh and last king in the direct succession of the Valois branch of the Capetian dynasty. Having become king at the age of thirteen, he was placed under the guardianship of his sister Anne de Beaujeu, regent of France. At twenty-one, he married Anne of Brittany, thus preparing the annexation of the Duchy of Brittany to the Kingdom of France (1491). His reign saw the loss of the County of Artois, the County of Burgundy and the County of Roussillon, which had been annexed by his father Louis XI (1493). Historical background
METALLIC SERIES OF THE KINGS OF FRANCE
This series was engraved by Thomas Bernard and is interrupted, for this author, with the token of Louis XIV. The following tokens are engraved by Nicolas Gatteaux for Louis XV, Duvivier for Louis XVI, Puymaurin and Gayrard for Louis XVII, Puymaurin and Depaulis for Louis XVIII. The series is often attributed to Jean Dassier on the faith of Forrer but he corrects his assertion in his volume VIII and confirms the archives of the Monnaie de Paris which specify that the series was commissioned by Monsieur de Launay. There are different issues, in copper or brass, of varying weights but consistent by series, the reverse dies are sometimes varied. The classification of kings is done according to ancient usage, in three successive races. We note the existence of a very rare token explaining the abbreviations that we have only seen in a brass series. The packaging of this series was in a wooden tube. It is of course very difficult to reconstruct it and it should be noted that the different tokens have very different rarities, having probably been bought piecemeal by the public, favoring the good kings. There is at least one series in silver, possibly apocryphal, completed up to Napoleon III with tokens for all successive regimes, including the Revolution and Napoleon I, see MONNAIES 28, n° 1395.
