Napoléon III et Eugénie visitent le nord de la France en septembre 1853 afin de rendre hommage à l’activité industrielle de la région. La ville de Lille comptait de nombreuses filatures, fonderies et constructions mécaniques ainsi qu’une industrie chimique.
